The seven Irish-American families under threat of extradition or deportation by the United States government have been given a slight reprieve with the September 9th suspension of deportation proceedings of certain Irish nationals (Robert McErlean, Matthew Morrison, Gabriel Megahey, Brian Pearson, Noel Gaynor, and Gerald McDade) by the Attorney General of the United States. It is important to note that this suspension is not the same as a dismissal meaning that the cases could become reactivated immediately with word from the AG. The US government still links the outcome of these men's cases to the ongoing peace process in the North of Ireland.

Noel Cassidy

Not covered by the September 9th suspension of deportation proceedings by the US Attorney General is Noel Cassidy. A native of County Monaghan, Ireland, Noel has been involved in Irish nationalist and cultural politics for many years. In 1978, Noel was arrested without grounds and interrogated by both the RUC and British intelligence for three days. Noel went on the blanket protest upon his conviction and spent the next 23 months in H-4 of Long Kesh. Released in February 1981, Noel came to the United States to tell people of what was going on in the prisons. In December of 1990 he was arrested at gunpoint and charged with illegal entry into the United States. He was ordered deported in October 1991 -- that order is now on appeal. Read more about Noel's case and how you can help at the Friends Of Noel Cassidy web page.
