Hanover, Pa., is named for Hannover, Germany. For 123 years the monarch of Hannover also ruled England. All members of the royal family of the House of Hanover (English spelling) and their servants wore a Hanover Black Rose insignia to denote their lineage. The joint House of Hanover rule began in 1714 when the German King George I claimed the English throne and ended in 1837 when Hanoverlan law prohibited the English Queen Victoria from taking the German throne because she was a woman. The Black Rose was adopted as the Hanover, Pa., community insignia in 1978 by the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. |
